Deciding

Which of the two situations your Pompey roof is

On the older half the low roof is usually a later addition on an older structure, and the interesting questions are the deck, the framing and how the addition meets the original building. Expect the quote to carry an allowance for what is found. On the newer half the shallow section is generally part of the design, built in one go with consistent framing, and the job is more predictable: measure, confirm the covering was wrong or has simply reached the end, and recover it properly. Knowing which you are in lets you read a quote sensibly, and it is one of the few places where a town's age profile genuinely changes the advice.

  1. Establish whether the low roof was original

Designed in from the start or added later changes what is underneath and how predictable the job will be.

  2. Ask for an allowance on an older structure

A later addition on a prewar house can hide anything. A stated rate for deck and framing repair turns that into a manageable number.

  3. Measure regardless of the age

The 2:12 line applies to both halves of this town. A modern shallow roof can be as wrongly covered as an old one.

Of 2,901 housing units, 23.5 percent were built in 1939 or earlier, 25.7 percent before 1950, 50.2 percent before 1980 and 49.8 percent in 1980 or later. 94.1 percent are single-family detached and 97.1 percent of occupied units are owner occupied.

Section R905.2.2 of the 2025 Residential Code of New York State provides that asphalt shingles shall be used only on roof slopes of 2 units vertical in 12 units horizontal, a 17 percent slope, or greater, and that from 2:12 up to 4:12 a double underlayment application is required. The wording is unchanged from the superseded 2020 edition.

No public dataset counts enclosed porches, low-slope additions, breezeways or attached garage roofs in Onondaga County. The American Community Survey publishes year structure built, units in structure, tenure and value by place and town, and no roof geometry at all. Neither the Census nor the New York codes publish roof slope or roof covering by property.

What low-slope roofing involves

Local Context

The barbell in Pompey's housing and what it means

Most towns have a middle and this one does not. 23.5 percent of Pompey's 2,901 units were built in 1939 or earlier and 49.8 percent in 1980 or later, with very little in between, so a shallow roof here belongs either to an old house that has been added to over generations or to a modern one where it is part of the original design. The rule is the same for both: section R905.2.2 of the 2025 Residential Code of New York State permits asphalt shingles only at 2 units vertical in 12 horizontal or steeper. What differs is what you find when the covering comes off, and how straightforward it is to put right.

Questions

Low roof questions from Pompey homeowners

Our house is from the 1990s and the porch roof already leaks. Is that normal?

It is common enough and it is usually about slope rather than age. A shallow porch or entry roof built with the same shingles as the main house will behave badly if it sits below the rated pitch, and it will do that from the beginning. The measurement tells you whether you are looking at a wear problem or a covering that was never right up there.

Can you tell how many Pompey homes have low roofs?

No, because nothing published records roof slope or covering by property in this county, and no dataset counts additions or porches. What is on the record is the age split of the housing, which tells you what kind of building you are likely to be dealing with. The slope itself has to be measured on your roof.
