Deciding

Testing the underground half before buying the visible half

There is a five minute test worth doing before any quote is accepted. Put a hose into the top of the buried leader and watch: if water backs up at the inlet or surfaces near the wall, the line is blocked or broken and no new gutter will change that. If it runs away cleanly and you can find where it emerges, you know the system works and the fault is above ground. Doing that first is what stops a drainage job being bought twice, and on a DeWitt house it is often the difference between a modest clearance job and a full replacement that solves nothing.

  1. Hose test the buried line first

Water backing up at the inlet tells you the fault is underground. It is the cheapest test available and it reorders the whole quote.

  2. Find where the line is supposed to end

Ten feet out, and never tied into the foundation drain. If nobody knows where it emerges, that is the thing to establish before spending.

  3. Keep gutters and leaders as separate decisions

A sound run above a broken line does not need replacing. Price them apart so you can see which half you are actually buying.

In the Town of DeWitt the median year of construction is 1963. Of 10,996 housing units, 18.7 percent were built in 1939 or earlier, 24.5 percent before 1950, 75.8 percent before 1980 and 24.2 percent in 1980 or later. 69.5 percent are single-family detached and 73.6 percent of occupied units are owner occupied.

The Department of Energy guide directs that gutters be installed along the roof eaves sloping at least 1/16 inch per foot of run to give positive drainage toward the downspouts, and that downspouts terminate at least 5 feet from the foundation, or discharge to an underground catchment at least 10 feet from the foundation that is not connected to the foundation drain system. Gutter channels come in 4, 5 and 6 inch sizes and the style, K or half round, is aesthetic rather than a performance difference.

What gutters and drainage involves

Local Context

The part of a DeWitt drainage system that is underground

A downspout that disappears into the ground is a promise somebody made decades ago. Federal guidance allows a discharge to an underground catchment provided it finishes at least 10 feet from the foundation and is never connected into the foundation drain, and it asks for at least 1/16 inch of fall per foot in the gutter above. On a town with a median build year of 1963 and 73.6 percent owner occupancy, plenty of those buried lines were laid at the build, have never been rodded, and now end in a crushed elbow or a root mass a yard from the wall. The gutter above is blamed, replaced, and the wet patch stays exactly where it was.

Questions

Drainage questions from DeWitt homeowners

Can a blocked underground line make the basement wet?

It can, because a blocked leader dumps the entire roof plane's water at the foundation wall instead of ten feet away. That is one of the more common ways a roof drainage fault turns into a basement complaint, and it is also one of the cheaper ones to correct once the blockage is found.

Is it worth digging up an old leader or just abandoning it?

Both are legitimate and it depends on the run. A short line with one crushed section is usually worth opening; a long line under a mature driveway often is not, and an above-ground extension carrying water clear of the foundation does the same job for far less. We will say which we think applies before anybody starts digging.
