Most people assume a deck has to freeze before it can make water, and the code says otherwise. Section R806.5 of the 2025 Residential Code of New York State offers an alternative route for unvented roofs: keep the monthly average temperature of the underside of the sheathing above 45F, calculated from an interior temperature of 68F and the outdoor average of the three coldest months. That 45F is where the code stops treating a deck as a condensation risk, and it is thirteen degrees above freezing.
