The one joint the code names by itself in Geddes
Among a general list of places that need flashing, section R903.2.1 of the 2025 Residential Code of New York State picks one out for its own sentence: a flashing shall be installed to divert water away from where the eave of a sloped roof meets a vertical sidewall. That is the bottom corner of a garage roof against the house, or the end of a porch roof at the main wall, and it is singled out because everything the slope collected arrives at that one point. Geddes is where this repeats: the town is 72.0 percent single-family detached and Westvale inside it is 98.6 percent detached, the highest share of any Census place in the metro, under a median build year of 1956, so one house design is repeated street after street.

What flashing repair involves

Using a repeated house design to your advantage
When a street was built to one plan, the diagnosis travels. If the same corner is wet in your house and in two others nearby, that is not a coincidence and it is not bad luck: it is a detail that was built the same way on all of them and is now the same age. It is worth asking a contractor whether they have opened this junction on this design before, because someone who has can tell you what is behind the cladding before anybody cuts. It also means the repair can be specified properly rather than improvised, and that a second house on the street is a much cheaper visit than the first.
Find the low corner where the roof meets the wall
Everything off that slope arrives there. It is the joint the code names on its own, and on this housing it is the usual failure.
Compare with the same house nearby
Westvale and the town around it repeat a small number of designs. What a neighbor found is real evidence about your wall.
Ask whether the contractor knows the design
Someone who has opened this junction on this plan before can price it properly instead of discovering it on the day.

Section R903.2.1 of the 2025 Residential Code of New York State requires flashings at wall and roof intersections, wherever there is a change in roof slope or direction, and around roof openings, and requires a flashing to divert water away from the point where the eave of a sloped roof meets a vertical sidewall. Where the flashing is metal it must be corrosion resistant and not less than 0.019 inch thick, which is No. 26 galvanized sheet.

Flashing questions from Geddes homeowners
Water marks the wall inside near the garage. Is the garage roof failing?
More likely the junction than the covering. The bottom corner where a garage roof meets the house wall is the point that takes all the water off that slope, and if the flashing there is short, surface-fixed or missing a turn-out, it puts that water into the wall. The rest of the garage roof can be in perfectly good order.
Three houses on my street have had this done. Is it a design fault?
It is more often an era than a fault: a detail built to the standard of the day, repeated across a development, now reaching the end of its service at the same time. That is useful rather than alarming, because it means the repair is well understood and the contractor is not starting from scratch on your house.
